The Edge Chronicles:
Beyond the Deepwoods
by Paul Stewart and
Chris Riddell
Reading level:
Ages 9-12
The Edge Chronicles
is a new saga from
British
author-illustrator team
Paul Stewart and
Chris Riddell
hitting shelves in North
America. The series
begins with Book 1,
Beyond the Deepwoods,.
The main character,
Twig, knows that he is
different than everyone
else in the Woodtroll
community. When he
discovers that his
family found him
abandoned in the
Deepwoods, Twig embarks
upon a journey of
self-discovery and
realizes what the world
beyond the Deepwoods is
like. But along the way
to finding out where his
roots lie, Twig will
meet a motley crew
of creatures who help
him get to where he
needs to be. All of
these fascinating
creatures are uniquely
described in vivid
detail, along with
wonderful sketch
illustrations. You
can't help but wonder
who Twig is going to
meet next, what will
happen to him and where
his travels will take
him. All in all, this is
a fun read that takes
you to other worlds
where the strangest of
creatures live and
breathe.
The
Education of Little Tree
by Forrest Carter
Reading level:
young adults
A five-year-old "half
breed" Cherokee Indian
is left orphaned in
Tennessee in the early
1900's and is adopted by
his loving grandparents.
Restrained by the chains
of prejudice of the
white men and ignorance
to their way, the couple
struggles to teach the
young boy the way of the
Cherokee people and
share a precious few
blissful years before
their time is out.
You'll journey with
Little Tree through the
Chattanooga Mountains,
joining him on his many
adventures as complex as
the illegal whiskey
making trade and as
simple as standing on
top of a mountain to
watch the sun rise.
You'll see the Cherokee
perspective on big
events such as the Civil
War and the Trail of
Tears as well as smaller
ones such as relating to
the earth and to other
people. This book will
make you laugh and this
book will bring tears to
your eyes. Its
characters are lovable
and believable. It's one
of those books that you
can apply to your own
life, one that becomes a
part of you, one that
you'll never forget.
